Mänttä Music Festival Environmental plan
The Mänttä Music Festival aims to be a small-scale festival with a big responsibility: a nature-oriented and sustainably organized event where art and the environment coexist in harmony. The festival’s ecological practices are not a separate part of its production—they are part of its identity.
Goal:
The Mänttä Music Festival is committed to operating in an ecologically, socially, and economically sustainable manner. The goal is for the festival to leave as small an environmental footprint as possible and to serve as a model for a responsible cultural event that brings together art, nature, and the community.
1. Principles of Environmental Responsibility
- The festival’s operations are based on respect for the environment, a thoughtful use of resources, and continuous improvement toward becoming a carbon-neutral event.
- Every employee, artist, and volunteer is briefed on the festival’s sustainability principles.
- Environmental responsibility is integrated into all planning and decision-making — from programme production to transportation and material procurement.
2. Energy Use and Venues
- The festival makes use of existing, energy-efficient venues, such as the Kivijärvi Hall at Serlachius.
- The museum spaces allow for the use of systems that are already environmentally certified and energy-efficient.
3. Transportation
- The festival promotes environmentally friendly modes of transportation:
- The public is encouraged to use public transportation and carpooling.
- Artists and staff are transported from the airport to Mänttä and within Mänttä in electric cars provided by Autokeskus Tampere to minimize the environmental impact of transportation.
- Serlachius also offers the option of traveling by bicycle.
- Logistics are planned to keep the volume of transportation and emissions as low as possible.
4. Procurement and Materials
- We strive to print all printed materials (brochures, programmes, posters) on environmentally certified paper.
- Digital communication is prioritized
- Marketing and presentation materials are designed to be reusable and durable.
- The festival favors local and socially responsible partners, such as restaurants and lodging providers.
5. Food and Catering
- Intermission and artist catering are provided in collaboration with Restaurant Gösta, located at the main concert venue.
- The use of disposable tableware is a last resort in all situations, and we always strive to use reusable or biodegradable alternatives.
6. Waste Sorting and Recycling
- All concert venues are equipped with recycling bins (general waste, paper, organic waste, metal, glass, plastic).
- Volunteers and event staff are instructed on how to sort and recycle waste.
7. Respect for Nature and the Environment
- The festival is held in a natural setting, and the areas surrounding the venues are kept clean and peaceful.
- The festival promotes responsible behavior in the natural environment to its audience.
8. Communication and Education
- The festival’s environmental initiatives are openly communicated on its website and in programme publications.
- The public is provided with practical tips for responsible participation, such as using public transportation, recycling, and making sustainable choices.
- Staff and volunteers receive a brief orientation on environmentally responsible practices before the festival.
9. Monitoring and Improvement
- The implementation of environmental measures is evaluated annually.
- The festival collects feedback from artists, the public, and staff on the success of its environmental measures.
- The results are used in planning for the following year, with the goal of continuous improvement.
